Buying sweets made for a fair and taking part in the fair

Question

Here the fair of Raksha Bandhan (a Hindu festival when sisters tie threads on brothers’ wrists) is held. Is it permissible to buy and eat sweets on this occasion or not? Because of the fair a great deal of sweets is made.

Answer

Shopkeepers make sweets for their own sales; buying and eating them is valid, even if they make them intending that the Raksha Bandhan people will buy them. One should, however, refrain from taking part in the fair.
