Restraining one’s wife from neglecting hijab
Question
Zayd admonishes his wife that she should observe hijab from non-mahram men, and he wants her to learn religious knowledge, but she refuses both of these. Moreover, Zayd’s means are (to provide) chutney and flatbread and to clothe (her) in coarse cotton cloth, and his wife says, “We cannot eat this food,” and without her husband’s consent she goes wherever she wishes, namely to the home of her maternal aunt and others, where non-mahram men come and go — namely her maternal uncle’s son, or her maternal aunt’s…
Answer
It is binding (lazim) upon the wife to obey Zayd in the matters mentioned and to live her life with patience and gratitude. Learning religious knowledge to the extent of need is fard; hijab from a non-mahram is also fard.
