Mixing with non-mahrams for the sake of amulets and charm threads
Question
Question: What is the ruling on a person who has made amulets and charm threads his profession, writes amulets from Qur’anic verses for non-Muslims as well, and takes a fee (ujra) from them? Moreover, he mixes with non-mahram women without hijab, to the extent that he beats non-mahram women, and says that Shaykh Madani ﵀ gave him permission to make amulets, or names his khalifas. Is this person’s conduct not contrary to the Shari‘a?
Answer
Writing Qur’anic verses, supplications from the hadiths, or their numerical values in an amulet and giving it for healing is permissible. Just as it is permissible to diagnose the illness of a non-mahram by placing the hand on the pulse, likewise, if the need arises, seizing the hair for the purpose of treatment is also permissible. Taking a fee for amulets is also permissible.
