Gilding or silvering a vessel

Question

Since using vessels and the like of silver and gold is haram, what about using a vessel that has a gilding or silvering (mulamma‘) on it?

Answer

If only the “water” (a thin wash) of silver or gold has been applied, which cannot be separated independently, then there is latitude; yet abstaining from it is still scrupulous piety (wara‘).
