Shaving the moustache

Question: What is the ruling on shaving (halq) the moustache? If shaving is permissible, then which is better — trimming (qasr) or shaving?

Answer

[ar]حلق الشارب بدعة، وقيل: سنة.[/ar] “Shaving the moustache is bid‘a; and it has been said: a sunna” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar, vol. 5, p. 358). From this text it is known that shaving the moustache is bid‘a, and there is also a view that it is sunna. And an act that lies between sunna and bid‘a is better left.
