Shaving the moustache

Question

Question: ‘Allama Shami wrote in his book “Shami” that shaving the moustache with a razor is permissible — please send that passage, together with the page and volume, clearly, with a translation and with vowel marks; and it would be even better if you also wrote the text of some authentic hadith. A great commotion (fitna) has arisen here over this: one mufti writes that it is a bid‘a (an innovation in religion)

Answer

[ar]حَلْقُ الشَّارِبِ بِدْعَةٌ، وَقِيلَ: سُنَّةٌ[/ar] “Shaving the moustache is a bid‘a, and it has also been said that it is a sunna” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar on the margin of Radd al-Muhtar, known as “Shami”, p. 358, vol. 5). Both these positions are found in one and the same book, in one and the same place.
