Wearing a necktie

Question

(1) If promotion in some employment depends on wearing a necktie, is it permissible in such a case to wear a tie or not? (2) Is there permission to wear a tie as part of the uniform of some college or school?

Answer

(1) The necktie was at one time a distinctive symbol (shi‘ar) of the Christians, and at that time the ruling on it was also strict. Now non-Christians also use it extensively, and many Muslims who are regular in fasting and prayer also use it; so now there is a relaxation in its ruling: it will not be called shirk or haram. Yet even now it is not free of dislikedness (karaha)
