An Operation after Which No Capacity for Intercourse Remains

Question

Question: Zayd married Zinat twelve years ago; she is the mother of three children. Recently Zayd had a sterilisation (?) operation done. Zinat says that because of this operation Zayd is no longer capable of intercourse, and at present she is not willing to live with him and wants to annul (faskh) the nikah. Can she annul it or not? And in what case can she annul it? And is it permissible to have such an operation done or not?

Answer

Having such an operation done, after which no capacity for intercourse at all remains or the ability to produce children is ended altogether, is by no means permissible; rather, it is a grave sin. However, the nikah has not been annulled because of it.
