Having One’s Wife Operated On Because of a Threat of Dismissal from Employment
Question
Question: Zayd is a government employee, the father of six children, and observant of the commands of Islam. A few days ago his officer called him and said, “You have many children, so, acting on family planning, have your wife operated on.” At this Zayd said, “My religion does not permit this, so I will never, ever have the operation done.” Because of this the officer threatened, “Be ready to be dismissed from your job.” Now the question is: what should Zayd do?
Answer
Since, relying on the religion of Islam, you have given your answer to the senior officer, you should remain firm and steadfast on it. To take a step against religion because of his threat is not permissible either by reason or by revealed text.
