The Sterilization Operation

Question

Question: During pregnancy my wife remains ill for about eight months; she has pain in her stomach, and whatever she eats and drinks is all vomited up. Can I have the operation done or not? And I have four children.

Answer

In pregnancy there is generally greater hardship, and vomiting is frequent. In the Qur’an it is said: [ar]حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا[/ar] “His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship” (Surah al-Ahqaf, 46:15). At the time of a child’s birth there is greater hardship.
