Consuming Wine Turned into Vinegar
Question
Question: Is vinegar made from palm wine (fermented palm sap) or from wine permissible or not?
Answer
If palm wine or wine is made into vinegar and its essence truly changes, then it is proper to eat it: [ar]الْخَمْرُ إِذَا خَلَّلَهُ بِعِلَاجِ الْمِلْحِ أَوْ بِغَيْرِهِ يَحِلُّ عِنْدَنَا[/ar] “Khamr, if it is turned into vinegar by treatment with salt or something else, becomes lawful according to us (the Hanafis)” (“Alamgiri”, vol. 2, p. 292).
