The ruling on the heron, the garsal and the Indian roller

Question

Question: Is the heron halal or not? Is the Indian roller halal or not? Is the garsal (a local name of a bird) halal or not?

Answer

The heron is halal. The garsal and the Indian roller that eat grain are halal, while the one whose food is filth and carrion is impermissible. The details are given in “Tamyiz al-Kalam bayn al-Halal wa al-Haram”. The determining factor is the diet.
