The ruling on pork
Question
Question: What is the Shari‘a ruling in this matter? Zayd went to the house of a Chamar (a member of an Indian caste of leatherworkers, regarded as low) and asked for pork. The Chamar refused to give it, so Zayd said: “Give it to me, we have eaten this meat many times already.” In any case, the Chamar gave it and Zayd ate it. When some people learned that this had happened, an inquiry was made and a community council was appointed.
Answer
(1) Setting a monetary condition from both sides in this way is not permissible in the Shari‘a; indeed, a monetary fine on any offender is itself not valid. Pork is categorically haram. Eating it is a grave disobedience and a major sin; repenting of it and feeling remorse is fard, but no monetary expiation (kaffara) for it is wajib. (2) The one who ate pork is a grave sinner.
