The pig is intrinsically impure; eating it is not permissible

Question

There is a village near Mawana; a man there has eaten pork, and it is not known whether he ate it knowingly or by forgetfulness. What is the ruling of the religion of Islam concerning this man?

Answer

The pig is intrinsically impure (najis al-‘ayn) and absolutely haram. Whoever ate it ate something haram. If he ate it knowingly, he committed a very grave sin, and repentance and seeking forgiveness (tawba and istighfar) are necessary for him; but he has not left Islam.
