A form of selling gold and silver
Question
(1) A person wanted to have gold and silver made up. He said: “I want five tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of gold made up; you are to put in the gold from your own stock; settle the rate.” We settled the rate, and he gave us five hundred rupees for the making. Is it permissible or not to settle the rate in this way and to take it once made? (2) We made jewellery of 20 tolas of silver and 2 tolas of gold for a man. On settling the account, one thousand in our banknotes remained owed by the customer.
Answer
If these five hundred rupees are deemed the wage for making the jewellery, it is also correct. Nowadays, if silver or gold is bought with rupees (banknotes) or with coin current at the time, this is not a sarf sale in which equality and mutual taking of possession in the session (taqabud fi al-majlis — hand to hand) would be necessary. (2) It is permissible. (3)
