Selling rupees, banknotes and small change with inequality
Question
(1) Is it permissible or not to sell, with inequality, the rupees now in circulation — in which silver is little and alloy (ghishsh) predominates — or a banknote, in exchange for the earlier rupees in which silver predominates and base metal is little? (2) Is the sale of a rupee or banknote for small change or paise (small copper coins, fractions of a rupee) with inequality permissible or not? And does all small change have one ruling, or does, for example, small change of base-metal alloy have a different ruling?
Answer
Answer (1) (1/2/3) Coins have one ruling: the value does not become less or more because of more or less base metal. Therefore the correct view is that their sale with inequality is not permissible. Answer (2) (1)
