A form of sarf transaction
Question
A man brings ten tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver and says that he wants a piece of jewellery for it. The jewellery is ready with the goldsmith, and the goldsmith either exchanges it equally after deducting the solder, or exchanges it after setting a price on both. Which of these is correct?
Answer
When silver is sold in exchange for jewellery of silver itself, equality is necessary; inequality (more or less) is not correct. But if on one side there is also something other than silver — for example some paise (small copper coins, fractions of a rupee), or some other coin such as a chawanni (a four-anna coin, i.e. a quarter rupee) or a half-rupee (eight-anna)
