Selling one banknote for two banknotes
Question
What is the ruling on giving one banknote and taking two banknotes?
Answer
Nowadays the banknote, by virtue of its circulation, has the status of independent property (mal), and it is not among the ribawi goods (amwal ribawiyya) in which like-for-like is obligatory; there is room for inequality (tafadul) in it, as some imams have stated regarding the sale of fulus (copper coins).
