Exchanging a banknote or rupee for small change
Question
Is it permissible or not to take small change for a rupee — a silver coin of the former issue — or for a rupee — a bronze coin of the new issue — or for a banknote, with inequality, i.e. to give a banknote or a rupee and take fourteen or eighteen annas (a coin worth 1/16 of a rupee) for it?
Answer
A rupee of pure silver, or one in which silver predominates, may not be sold with inequality for small change that is of pure silver or in which silver predominates — equality is necessary in this. For small change that is neither of pure silver nor predominantly silver, it is correct even with inequality — equality is not necessary in this.
