Buying Leftover Oil from an Oil-Presser
Question
Buying oil from an oil-presser who collects the mixed-up leftover oil from those who extract oil, or somehow fiddles with it (i.e. adulterates it) — permissible oil will also be mixed in with it — and sells it: is it permissible to buy from him or not?
Answer
If he steals and sells other people’s oil, then buying it is not permissible. If his own oil is also mixed into it, then by reason of the mixing he becomes its owner, but before he pays compensation (daman) it is impermissible for the oil-presser to dispose of it by sale and the like. Nevertheless, if someone buys it, he will become its owner.
