Lamps, Incense Sticks and Frankincense on a Grave
Question
What is the ruling on burning a lamp, incense sticks, frankincense and the like on a grave?
Answer
It is bid‘a and forbidden. Perfuming the deceased with incense is established at three times: first, when his soul departs; second, when he is washed; third, near the time of shrouding. End (“Bahr”, vol. 2, p. 191). On the grave it is not established — neither before burial nor after it. Those who light lamps on graves have been cursed by the Noble Prophet ﷺ (“Mishkat”, p. 71).
