A Gathering for Isal al-Thawab

Question

In our region, Gujarat, the method of isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased) by a khatm of the Holy Qur’an is this: in the mosques an announcement is written on the board that, for example, today after the Friday prayer or after the ‘isha prayer a gathering of khatm al-Qur’an has been arranged for the isal al-thawab of so-and-so. After the khatm of the Qur’an there are neither sweets nor any customs and conventions.

Answer

As for those who censure this and yet arrange it themselves for some important personality — it is obvious how worthless [such] censure is. In the case asked about, people are not summoned for Qur’an recitation; rather, people come to perform the ‘isha or Friday prayer, and they are requested: please also do isal al-thawab for our deceased.
