The Customary Salat-o-Salam after the Friday Prayer
Question
In the Jami‘ Mosque of Khanpur, for the last two to four weeks, they have started [reciting] salam after the Friday prayer — for which there is no evidence from the Qur’an and Sunna, nor from the Companions ﵃ and the Tabi‘in. The salam is in the same customary manner: standing respectfully with hands folded, these people recite in a loud voice thus: [ar]يَا شَفِيعَ الْوَرَى سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ، يَا نَبِيَّ الْهُدَى سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ[/ar] “O intercessor of creation, peace be upon you!
Answer
Reciting salat-o-salam upon the Noble Prophet ﷺ is the duty of every Muslim and a great felicity and good fortune, while not reciting salat-o-salam is a great deprivation and misfortune; the pious predecessors (salaf salihin) have always kept salat-o-salam among their regular practices, and still do.
