A Particular Method of Collecting Donations

Question

For collecting donations for a mosque or a madrasa, is it permissible to go to people’s houses in a crowd with a banner, with several persons reciting in unison na‘t poems (poems in praise of the Prophet ﷺ) and poems of exhortation [to give], and thus to collect donations with poetry recital or not? And what is the ruling on the money of such a donation?

Answer

This method of collecting donations is contrary to the way of the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-salih); it should be refrained from.
