Before the Ruling of Prohibition the Companions Were Not Legally Bound
Question
It is said that the noble Companions ﵃, when they became Muslims, gave up all their wealth; so likewise, when we have repented, must we give up our wealth — even if it came by some impermissible means? Is this correct, and if it is not correct, then what is correct?
Answer
Before embracing Islam and before the revelation of the ruling of prohibition (hurma) they were not legally bound (mukallaf); those who are Muslims today are legally bound.
