Taunting a New Muslim

Question

What is the standing of a person who, leaving his religion, has entered Islam? Someone taunts this person, saying: “Prayer behind you is not valid”; and this word is also said: “You are a Chamar (an Indian caste of leatherworkers, regarded as low), and is prayer ever valid behind a Chamar?” They have also let slip from their tongue: “If one wishes to purify a pig it cannot become pure; therefore you too have not become pure.” Besides this, various other false accusations are made.

Answer

Whoever taunts a new Muslim commits a major sin (kabira); he should ask forgiveness of that new Muslim, and repentance is obligatory (wajib) upon him. If he does not repent and does not seek forgiveness, he will be seized by a severe punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
