The Fate of Those Who Disobey the Sacred Law
Question
What will be the fate of those who do not act upon the Sacred Law at all? Will they be forgiven or not? For as they disobey it day after day, their heart keeps growing darker — will iman then remain? Further, what will be the state of those who are openly engrossed in major sins (kaba’ir) and also mock matters of religion? And what will be the state of those who are openly engrossed in major sins but also feel remorse over it?
Answer
Despite their deserving severe punishment, if Allah the Exalted forgives them by His grace, nothing prevents it: [ar]يَغْفِرُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَآءُ[/ar] “He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills” (Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:129). And whoever comes to feel remorse — which is the essence of repentance (tawba)
