The Reckoning of Animals on the Day of Resurrection

Question

If a horned goat struck a hornless goat, then on the Day of Resurrection Allah the Exalted will give the hornless one horns and let it take its revenge — so speakers and preachers relate. Will these creatures too be subject to the reckoning (mukallaf) and deserving of punishment and reward?

Answer

It is correct; it is also in “Sunan al-Tirmidhi”. Concerning this retaliation it is written in the marginal gloss: [ar]قَالُوا: هَذَا قِصَاصُ مُقَابَلَةٍ لَا قِصَاصُ تَكْلِيفٍ، يُؤْخَذُ مِنَ الْأَطْفَالِ وَالْمَجَانِينِ وَالْحَيَوَانَاتِ كُلِّهَا، كَذَا فِي الطِّيبِيِّ وَاللَّمَعَاتِ[/ar] “They said: this is qisas (retaliation) by way of requital (muqabala)
