Praise of the Noble Companions

Question

From the standpoint of the Sacred Law, is praising the Companions fard, wajib or sunna?

Answer

Praise of the noble Companions ﵃ is found in abundance in the Qur’an and hadith, and every Friday the khatib, having ascended the minbar, praises the Companions. Hazrat Mujaddid Alf Thani ﵋ wrote that this is one of the distinguishing marks (shi‘ar) of the Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama‘a: if it is obstructed, then doing it becomes necessary.
