A Detailed Account of Shirk

Question

What does shirk mean? Is it to hold that God has a son or a grandson, or to hold that there are two gods instead of one God? Or are there other things besides these that constitute shirk? Which things, then, constitute shirk? Kindly write in detail.

Answer

Allah, the Pure, is unique in His Essence and Attributes. To hold that there is any other essence like His is shirk; to hold that anyone possesses attributes like His Attributes is shirk; to perform for anyone else the acts that are performed for Him alone is shirk; needs are asked of Him alone, and to ask them of anyone else is shirk.
