Vitamin A (retinol) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Vitamin A in foods — synthetic retinol esters (acetate, palmitate) from β-ionone; the palmitate — from the acetate or by direct synthesis with palmitic acid of unnamed origin (per VRG — cattle, pig or plants). Natural vitamin A — from fish liver oil (cod, shark), historically whale. Dry forms — a matrix of gelatin (bovine, fish, mostly unnamed)

Basis of the ruling

Vitamin A in foods is synthetic retinol esters (acetate and palmitate) made from β-ionone; natural vitamin A comes from fish liver oil. Retinyl palmitate is made with palmitic acid whose origin is not named for the chemical route. Commercial palmitic acid is vegetable or animal — from cattle and pig fat.
