Description

Vitamin B3 (PP) — nicotinic acid and nicotinamide synthesised from pyridine bases (3-picoline, 5-ethyl-2-methylpyridine). At Jubilant and Red Sun the bases come from acetaldehyde, formaldehyde and ammonia, the acetaldehyde from ethanol of molasses, cassava, straw; Lonza's nicotinic acid is petrochemical. Lonza and Red Sun make nicotinamide by enzymatic hydrolysis.

Basis of the ruling

Vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid and nicotinamide) is made by chemical synthesis from pyridine bases. Some producers make these bases from acetaldehyde, and the acetaldehyde from food alcohol fermented from molasses, cassava or straw; such alcohol is not from grapes or dates, but it is doubtful.
