The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Ham — is it halal?

Ruling: Haram

Description

Ham is a cured hind leg of pork, cooked or uncooked. In the US the word “ham” without a species prefix may be used only for the hind legs of swine. “Ham” is also made from turkey (thigh) and beef — the species is then part of the name.

Basis of the ruling

Ham is a cured pork leg, cooked or uncooked. Curing, cooking and drying do not change the essence of the meat, so there is no istihala. The pig is impure in essence and all its parts are forbidden.
