The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Taurine — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is used in infant formula, energy drinks, supplements and feed. Industrially it is made by chemical synthesis from ethylene oxide or monoethanolamine (c1, c2). Japan uses taurine extract from organs and meat of fish and mammals (fish — c3, mammals — c5, species not named; aquatic non-fish — c4, only by the JSFA 10 definition).

Basis of the ruling

Taurine is made industrially mainly by chemical synthesis — from ethylene oxide or monoethanolamine. Other methods are also described: extraction from molluscs (mussels, oysters) — aquatic animals other than fish — and from bovine liver (in a study), where the slaughter of the animal is not described.
