Stone fruit and melons (peach, apricot, plum, pomegranate, melon, watermelon) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Stone fruit (peach, nectarine, apricot, plum, cherry plum), pomegranate, melon, watermelon, quince, persimmon, feijoa, their juices and purées. The fruit itself is plant-based. The peel of fresh peaches, melons, pomegranates may be coated with wax and shellac E904; in the EU melons and pomegranates also with E471. Gelatine, among others, is allowed for juice clarification.

Basis of the ruling

Peach, apricot, plum, pomegranate, melon and watermelon are plant-based. The fruit peel is coated with wax and shellac E904 (an insect secretion that retains particles of the insect itself) and with emulsifiers based on fatty acids of unknown origin; on loose fruit this is not always visible.
