The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Coffee, chicory — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Coffee (beans, ground, instant, extract, decaffeinated) and chicory. The raw material itself is plant-based. In the EU instant coffee and chicory extract are made with water only. Decaffeinated coffee — with solvents that are usually not listed in the ingredients. In the EU beans may be glazed with shellac E904 and beeswax E901. Kopi luwak coffee is made from beans collected from civet droppings.

Basis of the ruling

Coffee and chicory are plant-based. The caffeine is removed with solvents, including ethanol whose source is not stated. The finished product does not show whether this was used, so such a product is doubtful (mushbooh) because of the possibility of haram.
