The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Vitamin D (D3, D2) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

D3 is made from lanolin cholesterol — sheep wool grease (wool of live, slaughtered, possibly dead sheep); patents and reviews also name pig skin, brain, milk fat, oils of fish and marine animals, phytosterols; D3 also comes from fish oil, lichen, algae. D2 — from yeast and fungi. Dry forms — a gelatin or gum arabic matrix with sucrose; softgels — gelatin (pork, bovine, fish, mostly unnamed)

Basis of the ruling

Vitamin D3 is made from the cholesterol of lanolin, the wool grease of sheep: the cholesterol is converted into a provitamin and irradiated with ultraviolet light. There is also D3 from fish oil, lichen and algae, while D2 is made from yeast and fungi.
