E959 Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone — is it halal?
Description
NHDC: neohesperidin is extracted with a hydroalcoholic solution from immature bitter oranges (at some producers — naringin from pomelo or grapefruit), hydrogenated on Pd/C or nickel under alkaline conditions, crystallised. Possible links: ethanol of unnamed raw material in extraction, elution and hydrogenation (HTBA states it does not use it — the contradiction with EFSA 2022 is unresolved)
