The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E955 Sucralose — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Sucralose is chlorinated sucrose: sucrose → sucrose-6-acetate (tin catalyst or enzyme) → chlorination → deacylation → decolorisation, crystallisation. Possible links: sucrose (cane at Tate & Lyle and JK; sugar bone char — denied by T&L's supplier in 2012, not established for others); ethanol in crystallisation (Tate & Lyle/Talres and Chinese patents); activated carbon (bone char possible).

Basis of the ruling

Sucralose is sucrose modified by chlorination: sucrose is acetylated, chlorinated, deacetylated, decolourised with carbon and crystallised. In patents of Tate & Lyle, Talres and Chinese applicants, sucralose is crystallised from ethanol — alcohol whose source is not named.
