Description

Montan acid esters (E 912) are a glazing agent made from the fossil plant wax of brown coal: montan wax is extracted with solvents (c3–c12; per EFSA — benzene with ethanol), refined (carbon and bone char as a variant c14–c15), oxidised with chromosulfuric acid to C22–C34 acids (c2) and esterified with ethylene glycol (c17), 1,3-butanediol (c18) or glycerol (c19, E422)
