E494 Sorbitan monooleate — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

An emulsifier: a mixture of partial esters of sorbitol and its anhydrides (sorbitan, isosorbide) with commercial oleic acid; the main constituent is 1,4-sorbitan monooleate. The instruments do not name the fat; polysorbate 80 for virus inactivation (usually made from sorbitan monooleate) was made from bovine tallow and is now available in two forms (Baxter).

Basis of the ruling

Sorbitan monooleate is an emulsifier: esters of sorbitol and its anhydrides with commercial oleic acid. Food standards do not name the type of fat, and pharmacopoeias allow oleic acid of both animal and plant origin.
