E492 Sorbitan tristearate — is it halal?
Description
An emulsifier: a mixture of partial esters of sorbitol and its anhydrides (sorbitan, isosorbide) with commercial stearic acid; 85–92% fatty acids per JECFA and China. Per producer statements, sorbitol comes from maize, tapioca or wheat. No instrument names the fat from which the stearic acid comes; four producers in the VRG survey state plant raw materials, but an ICI patent allows tallow acids for sorbitan esters.
