E228 Potassium hydrogen sulphite — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Potassium hydrogen sulphite (E228) is, under 231/2012, an aqueous solution of KHSO3. It is made by passing sulphur dioxide (c2) into a potassium carbonate solution (c1; CN114057210A). In three patents on food-grade E224, where KHSO3 solution is the intermediate, the potassium alkali solution is purified with activated carbon of undisclosed raw material (c3)

Basis of the ruling

Potassium hydrogen sulphite is an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt: sulphur dioxide is passed into a potassium carbonate solution. The doubt lies in the origin of the sulphur dioxide.
