E224 Potassium metabisulphite — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Potassium metabisulphite is an inorganic salt: sulphur dioxide (E220, c1) + potassium hydroxide and/or carbonate (c2). The sources on E224 itself name no animal raw material or alcohol. Possible links: activated carbon of unnamed origin in solution purification (c3; bone variant not excluded — c4), BASF mass-balance grades (c5), oxidation inhibitors of undisclosed composition in earlier practice (c6)

Basis of the ruling

Potassium metabisulphite is an inorganic salt: sulphur dioxide is passed into a solution of potassium hydroxide or carbonate. The doubt lies in the raw materials and processing aids.
