E227 Calcium hydrogen sulphite — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Calcium hydrogen sulphite is an inorganic salt, an aqueous solution of Ca(HSO3)2: sulphur dioxide (E220; from sulphur or sulphide ores) (c1) + lime (c2). The own sources of E227 name no animal raw material, alcohol or aquatic non-fish (possible shell-lime variant — c7); the production links of SO2 itself (dossier E220) are separate components: spent acids of unknown origin (c3), alcohol incl. ethanol (c4)

Basis of the ruling

Calcium hydrogen sulphite is an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt: sulphur dioxide is passed through lime. The source of the lime is not disclosed, and it may come from shells or corals, which are aquatic animals other than fish.
