E220 Sulphur dioxide — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Sulphur dioxide is made by burning sulphur and roasting sulphide ores (c1). Food-grade SO2 is liquefied; in China also an aqueous solution (GB 1886.213). Grillo sells to the food and pharma industries SO2 from recycling spent sulphuric acids of undisclosed industries; the reactor burner is also designed for waste oil (c2). Pack patents describe SO2 stripped via ethanol (c3), methanol (c9), n-butanol (c10)

Basis of the ruling
