E1518 Glyceryl triacetate — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

A humectant, carrier and solvent: triacetin, the triester of glycerol and acetic acid. Allowed in the EU (chewing gum, carrier in flavourings and nutrients), the US (GRAS), the EAEU and Codex; in China — only as a synthetic food flavouring and flavour carrier. The instruments do not name the glycerol origin. Patents on triacetin (a fuel-additive WO and a general Chinese CN that lists food additives among uses)

Basis of the ruling

Glyceryl triacetate (triacetin) is a triester of glycerin and acetic acid: it is made from glycerin and acetic anhydride or acid. The standards do not name the origin of the glycerin; in a Celanese patent "natural" glycerin comes from animal and vegetable fats.
