E1517 Glyceryl diacetate — is it halal?
Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)
Description
A carrier and humectant: diacetin, a mixture of glycerol 1,2- and 1,3-diacetates. In the EU allowed only as a carrier in flavourings; allowed in the EAEU; not found as a food additive in Codex, China (GB 2760) or the US. The instruments do not name the glycerol origin; a Chinese diacetin patent explains the interest by the surplus of biodiesel glycerol made from animal and plant fats (动植物油脂), species not named.
Basis of the ruling
Glyceryl diacetate (diacetin) is a diester of glycerin and acetic acid. The standards do not name the origin of the glycerin; a Chinese patent on diacetin uses glycerin from biodiesel, which is made from animal and vegetable fats, animal species not named.
