الْحَلَالُ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامُ بَيِّنٌ، وَبَيْنَهُمَا مُشَبَّهَاتٌ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَمَنِ اتَّقَى الْمُشَبَّهَاتِ اسْتَبْرَأَ لِدِينِهِ وَعِرْضِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E1519 Benzyl alcohol — is it halal?

Description

E1519 is benzyl alcohol (phenylmethanol); «alcohol» in the name is a chemical class, not ethanol. In the EU only a carrier solvent in flavourings (Annex III, Part 4), in the EAEU a carrier, in China a synthetic flavouring substance. Main routes start from toluene: chlorination to benzyl chloride and hydrolysis (c1–c6), and air oxidation (c7, c39–c41).
