E1516 Glyceryl monoacetate — is it halal?
Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)
Description
A flavour solvent (per guides): monoacetin, the monoester of glycerol and acetic acid. Not found in any food instrument (EU, EAEU, Codex, China); JECFA (1979) included it in a group ADI without a specification; in the US mentioned only for cellophane packaging. Guides describe it as synthesised from glycerol and acetic acid or anhydride; nobody names the glycerol origin. A synthesis from propylene also exists.
Basis of the ruling
Glyceryl monoacetate (monoacetin) is an ester of glycerin and acetic acid. It is made by synthesis from glycerin and acetic acid or anhydride, and in patents also from propylene. The sources do not name the origin of the glycerin.
